My official Release/Deep Tissue Massage as the name implies, is the manual treatment of deep anatomical soft tissue structures. This work, based on a multi-faceted assessment, is slow, deep, and very specific - working either parallel with or perpendicular to the targeted muscles. You will often be asked to breathe into the area of work during a session. This causes you to both focus on the affected area and promotes movement that improves the efficiency of the work.
Contrary to a widely held myth, this type of massage doesn't have to hurt to be effective. It has been said, "If you are specific, you can go deep." If you have thorough anatomical knowledge - if you know the origin, insertion, and action of each muscle - and understand how muscles and tendons work, then you can work effectively on very deep structures without causing pain. This is how we most often do deep tissue massage.
Some types of very specific deep work - like Cyriax cross-fiber friction - may be indicated in certain situations. These techniques may be slightly uncomfortable both during and after the treatment. We will always warn you about this ahead of time and will work only within your comfort range. We will sometimes recommend icing the affected area after the massage. Typically, you will notice improved mobility almost immediately, and the pain usually disappears within a day or two.
Among the many benefits of these methods are:
- reduced pain
- Improved mobility; increased range of motion (ROM); restored ease of movement
- Reduced muscle hypertonicity, fibrosis, tension, and spasm
- Reduced scar tissue and other fascial adhesions (which can impair both circulatory and nerve function in addition to creating mechanical restrictions)
- Improved circulation of both blood and lymph
- Reduced ischemia (low blood supply) by releasing hypertonic muscles and reducing fascial adhesions, thereby improving circulation

Medical Massage Therapy
- In many auto injury and other injury cases our techniques may be referred to as “Medical Massage Therapy” and can be used effectively as the primary therapy. After an initial evaluation and assessment soft tissue injuries such as sprains/strains, muscle spasm, swelling, tissue scarring and other muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries may be treated. These are the most common accident injuries. With your physician’s approval you can receive massage therapy in conjunction with primary medical treatment.
