My official Release/Deep Tissue Massage as the name implies, is the manual treatment of deep anatomical soft tissue structures. This work, based on a multi-faceted assessment, is slow, deep, and very specific - working either parallel with or perpendicular to the targeted muscles. You will often be asked to breathe into the area of work during a session. This causes you to both focus on the affected area and promotes movement that improves the efficiency of the work.

Contrary to a widely held myth, this type of massage doesn't have to hurt to be effective. It has been said, "If you are specific, you can go deep." If you have thorough anatomical knowledge - if you know the origin, insertion, and action of each muscle - and understand how muscles and tendons work, then you can work effectively on very deep structures without causing pain. This is how we most often do deep tissue massage.

Some types of very specific deep work - like Cyriax cross-fiber friction - may be indicated in certain situations. These techniques may be slightly uncomfortable both during and after the treatment. We will always warn you about this ahead of time and will work only within your comfort range. We will sometimes recommend icing the affected area after the massage. Typically, you will notice improved mobility almost immediately, and the pain usually disappears within a day or two.
